Before you can use the responders in the classroom, you will need to set up your classes and class lists. Follow the directions below to do so.

Creating Classes:


1. Double click on the 'CPS' icon on the desktop to open the software

2. Close out of the pop-up help screen that appears

3. Click the 'Classes and Students' tab near the top left section of the page

4. On the left side of the screen under classes, click 'New' (it's the big green + symbol)

5. Choose 'Class'

6. Choose 'K-12' then click 'Next'

7. Give your class a name (ex. Period 1), then hit 'Next'

8. Click 'Next' again. You will get a message congratulating your for creating your class.

9. If you want to create another class click on the box that says "I want to create another class" and repeat the process above. If you are done creating your classes, simply click done.

10. Just like you would if you were typing a document, make sure to save your work by clicking the 'Save' icon on the CPS homepage.


Adding Students:


1. Select the class you want to add students to by left clicking on the class name. It should appear blue.

2. On the left side of the screen under classes, click 'New' (it's the big green + symbol)

3. Choose 'Student'

4. A new student line will appear on the right hand section of your page. Type in the student's first name and last name by left clicking on each box. Note that each student will have a different 'Pad ID'. You will need to assign them this number so they know which responder to grab when you use these in class.

5) Repeat the steps above to add the rest of your students to your class.


Now that you have created your classes and students, you can begin creating lessons on PowerPoint. Follow the directions below to do so.

Creating Questions & Lessons Using PowerPoint:

1. Double click on the 'CPS for PowerPoint' icon on the desktop to open the software

2. Add text and format your PowerPoint presentation just like you normally would.

3. To add questions for the student responders, click on the 'Insert Question' tab towards the top of the screen.

4. Select which kind of question you want to ask. You are limited to five choices.

5. Type in your question and answer choices in the appropriate text boxes on the screen that appears.

6. Select the right answer by clicking on the red 'X' next to it. It should turn to a green check mark.

7. Repeat the process above to add more questions. Note that you can put these questions in any order of your slide show. Perhaps you want a few at the beginning, one or two in the middle, and a few at the end. How you set up your slideshow is your choice.

8. Be sure to save your work.

Once you have done the administrative work to set up your classes, students, and lessons you can then put your work into practice in the classroom. Follow the directions below to do so.

Using the Responders in the Classroom
1. Assign each student a responder and pass them out. The students will need to turn them on by holding in the power button at the bottom of the responder.

2. Pull up your lesson by double clicking on the 'CPS for PowerPoint' icon on the desktop to open the software

3. Locate the PowerPoint you created and open the file

4. Click on the 'Slideshow' tab at the top of the screen

5. Click 'View Show'

6. A pop up window will appear. Choose the appropriate class then hit ok.

7. When you get to a point in your slideshow when it is time to use the responders follow these steps to use them:

  1. Click 'Engage' at the bottom of your screen
  2. Click 'Start'
  3. The students will respond by clicking on their answer choice on the responder and hitting send. Allow the students time to answer the question. When they've responded their number will darken. Note that you can change the time you allow the students to answer by clicking on the plus and minus buttons near them timer.
  4. When ready, hit 'End'. The number of students who selected each answer will appear along with the correct answer that you selected. Note that you can check to see how individuals responded by clicking on the chart icon near the bottom of the screen.
  5. When you are ready to proceed to the next slide hit the red 'X' close button in the bottom left hand corner


8. Continue your slideshow. When you get to another slide requiring the responders, repeat the process in step 7.

9. When you complete the lesson, have the students hold in the power button to turn off the responder. Then collect them.
